Our Purpose

Our mission is to ensure that Halifax’s natural places, clean air and water, abundance of wildlife, and profound sense of quiet are protected today and for generations to come. We support development only if it is sustainable, derived from an active community process, and respectful of Halifax’s land, environment, town goals and rural character. With a mere 500 houses scattered across 38 square miles, Halifax has no appreciable industry or commerce. People choose Halifax for its unspoiled wilderness and deep sense of quiet.Initially formed in response to a schist quarry proposed in the heart of our Conservation District, HCG needs to be a sustainable organization capable of taking on new projects as well. Until this quarry proposal, the town’s conservation ethos that states “the interior of the Conservation District should remain in its natural condition” had yet to be challenged by major development. Proactive efforts are needed, both for this first challenge, and for challenges to come.
