Phippsburg Climate Action Team ("CAT")
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to help low-income and senior neighbors stay safely and more comfortably in their homes and to save energy by launching a neighbor-to-neighbor weatherization project in Phippsburg, Maine. Phippsburg CAT is recruiting volunteers and qualified residents whose homes need air sealing, to be trained to tighten building envelopes by sealing windows, doors and holes. These measures will save fossil fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions as we educate our community about the local and global impacts of climate change and ocean acidification. Community benefits will include more comfortable residences and money savings to homeowners who likely will spend those savings in the community in the form of food, taxes, services or materials. The community will be strengthened by neighbors helping one another to be more comfortable, increasing local investments and helping insure residents can remain in their homes. Because Phippsburg has large numbers of seasonal, tourism-related and marine resource jobs, especially clamming and lobstering, which are being damaged by global warming and coastal acidification, we wish to empower residents to improve the health of our marine environment by reducing fossil fuel use in their homes and developing ecologically-based land use practices around their homes.
