Our Purpose

Our purpose is to create an organic garden for our K-12 School of almost 500 students.  Our school kitchen would use the food that we produce in lunches for our school.  Students in grades K-12 would all be able to participate in our school garden.  Students in grades 9-12 would be enrolled in a class (which they would receive credit for).  In this class, they will plan the entire garden: plan the landscape, decide what they are going to plant, use a budget to purchase all supplies, plant, maintain, and harvest the fruits of the garden.  Students in the lower school (which my son is a part of) will also be able to teach lessons and participate in the planting and harvesting.  The older students would be required to come every week over the summer (part of this class) to maintain and plant the garden as well. I love the whole idea of this garden to table concept and my principal is on board with me doing this.  I am an adjunct Biology Professor at UConn and a full-time biology teacher at Christian Heritage School.  Our chef LOVES to have fresh food in our cafeteria and this would be such an awesome experience for our students.  To be able to start from the beginning and create an entire garden with food that the entire school will be eating would give them such a sense of accomplishment.  They would learn about botany, cross-pollination, growing seasons, organic ways of keeping away pests, budgeting- and they would be connecting with experts to help them plan this garden.  How awesome is this!
