Please provide a brief description of the project for which you seek funding.

Brookline is facing difficult decisions about its future. Declining tax revenues, declining state and federal grants, increased demand for services, increased development, increased traffic, and increased demands for affordable housing are all taking a toll on the community and on our environment. Despite an overall appreciation for already existing open space in the community such as the historic parks created generations ago, a larger understanding of the critical role our remaining unprotected open spaces, natural resources, and urban forest play in creating a healthy and sustainable environment does not exist. The Community Preservation Act failed to pass in Brookline, and decision by policy makers about land use and development are being made under duress as the community struggles to figure out how best to pay for the ever increasing demands for public services. Our goal is to add a voice of reason and perspective, and to provide useful information at a time when decisions about land use are being made that will impact the community for generations to come. Our successful website (with over 300 visitors per week) and an electronic email service (both of which were made possible with the help of NEGEF), has allowed us to relay timely information to the community very quickly. This has prompted us to re-think the purpose and impact of our printed materials such as our newsletter. We currently spend approximately $2,500 on printing 4000, 8-12 page newsletter three times per year (or 12,000 newsletters per year). While the price has been more than reasonable, our very limited budget has forces us to rely on the services of a printer who does not typically produce publications. The quality of the pictures and the inconsistency of the ink job detracts from the content, which we believe has limited its impact. We would like to improve the quality of the publication by working with a professional printer. For this initial year we have decided to produce "Place" two times a year instead of three. The estimated costs of printing will be $3,650 for 4,000 newsletters, two times per year (or 8,000 newsletters), representing a $1,150 increase from current spending.

Whom does your group need to make this project happen?

Please explain how your group will engage members from your community in this project.

We believe the creation of a new publication called "Place" to replace our newsletter, could serve to offer more in-depth information about the kinds of tools and thinking available from other communities, and would help us frame the discussion about balancing growth with the need to protect the local environment. In addition to changes in content, this new publication would be re-designed to have a more appealing look, and would be printed by a more professional printer.

If your group receives a NEGEF Grow grant, how do you plan to pay for remaining expenses?

Please describe what changes will occur in your community and its environment when your group's project is successful.

We believe that a more in-depth, professional looking publication will have a greater impact on its targeted audience (Town Meeting members, Selectmen, votes and others who typically are involved in local decision making) and that a stronger voice for protecting the local environment will result. We also hope it will help create more name recognition for our organization in the community, and help to grow our membership base in order to support the longer term increased costs of the new publication.

What relevant skills does the group need (but does not currently have access to) to help move the initiative forward?

Fundraising and Board Development.
