Our Purpose

The Friends of the Fryeburg Water District was formed immediately after a meeting of the Fryeburg Water District. At the meeting the board of trustees informed the citizens in attendance that they were intending on making the Fryeburg Water District inactive. We were told by the chairman that we must come up with $800 to run the elections for the next year to keep it active. This decision was not considered to be in the best interest of the members of the Fryeburg Water District or citizens of Fryeburg in general and an Ad Hoc group formed afterward in the parking lot to determine some actions to keep the FWD in active status. 6 months later a meeting was called by the FWD with no agenda posted. 30 people showed up wondering why the meeting was called. Immediately after the meeting started, we were all informed by the chairman that the FWD would be inactive immediately because the $800 was not raised. when the members in attendance asked for 24 hours to come up with the money the Board of Trustees flatly refused. So everyone dug into their wallets and then and there and produced enough money to have an election. This past June the elections were held. Three people ran for two seats. the second place finisher was determined ineligible and the board of Trustees would not allow the third place finisher to take office even though he had received a very substantial number of votes. He had run his campaign on keeping the FWD active and apparrently the board did not like his position. This went against the Charter of the organization and any arguments would not sway the Board. This ended up being a very adversarial and contentious meeting, and although requests were made to hold another meeting in a month, it was denied by the Board. They would only have another meeting in 12 months.Because of this public outcry and possible legal action against the board or a possible recall of the chairman, the entire Board has written a public letter stating they will all resign and allow a new slate of trustees to run for elections in November. However, they have only given the members until August 1 to raise another $800 for elections which will be held in November. The Friends of the Fryeburg Water District are interested in reaching out to members within the boundaries of the FWD to run for election and a number of people have agreed. There have been 5 meetings at this address to strategize and organize. We feel there is a need for trustees to be active and transparent and work for the benefit of the people affected by the issues surrounding drinking water in this area. Nestle Waters North America is already present in town and aggressively trying to take control of the aquifer under Fryeburg and surrounding towns. The Friends of the Fryeburg Water District are interested in educating people that would be affected by the present and future actions of Nestle. When a more active and informed Board of Trustees for Fryeburg Water District is in place, this role could be taken over by the that organization. There are many things the FWD could do if it had a willing board of trustees. The first hurdle is raising the money for elections and campaign materials which would also be part of the education process about better ways to manage the water in the aquifer that would benefit the citizens of Fryeburg instead of a large corporation that is presently trying to lock in a 45 year contract to extract a minimum of 75 million gallons a year to be transported off site put in bottles and sold for a huge profit with no benefits to the people in the area.
