STAR Program, Northfield High School
Our Purpose
to grow food for our school community. In 2011, our two teachers took a course called Farm to School where they learned about teaching the importance of growing and eating local produce. This led to the construction of raised beds at both our high school and elementary schools. The students at the elementary school are learning how to grow and prepare food in their classrooms using the raised beds. At the high school level, courses have been developed to teach students the importance of eating local produce. Students have grown produce for the school cafeteria, Family Consumer Science classes, and for our annual Harvest Dinner. Even though we have produced a fair amount of food already, we would like increase production so that every day we can incorporate more local grown food into our lunches.
