Our Purpose
The big-picture goal of Foothills Food Works is to provide sustainable, healthy, and accessible food solutions to the community of Oxford Hills. With a focus on local food production, reducing food waste, increasing food security, and supporting regional farmers & food producers. We aim to strengthen local food systems by fostering connections between producers and consumers, promoting nutrition education, and addressing issues like food insecurity and sustainability. We believe that access to healthy, nutritious food is a human right, not a privilege, and we focus on addressing those barriers for our community. The poverty rate in downtown Norway is significantly higher than both state and national averages. 34.6% of the population lives below the poverty line, which is more than double the rate in Oxford County (14.4%) and over three times the poverty rate for Maine as a whole (10.9%). One in three residents faces economic hardship. The median household income in Norway is also quite low, at approximately $38,381, which is only about 60% of Maine's median income. This economic disparity comes with significant financial challenges, which impact access to housing, healthcare, education, and overall quality of life.We will focus from the bottom up to create opportunities for connection at community dinners, cooking classes, afterschool cooking programs, volunteerism, and creating a “prepared food” food pantry.
