Our Purpose

Our mission "is to promote actions and practices that serve to protect the environment and health and welfare of South Portland Maine"Through grassroots organizing and a groundswell of community efforts & support, we stopped tar sands from coming to South Portland - protecting other communities in New England & Canada, as well as our own from the dangers of tar sands oil. We have also raised thousands of dollars for the city's legal defense in the lawsuit brought by the oil industry which seeks to have the Clear Skies Ordinance overturned. We spearheaded & worked to promote the creation of an ordinance by South Portland to stop the use of toxic pesticides on municipal & private property and are now working on the education of property owners on the implementation of caring for lawns without toxic pesticides in order to increase compliance. We worked with the Thornton Heights community in the successful effort to stop a propane transfer facility from being built dangerously close to homes. We are working to engage the community in a Climate Action & Adaptation Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, transition to renewable energy, increase recycling, reduce waste and engage citizens in climate action and adaptation planning.
