Barrington Waterways Protection Committee
Our Purpose
To educate and protect the health, safety, and welfare of river ecosystems and residents of Barrington, New Hampshire by establishing a Community Bill of Rights (CBR) and by prohibiting resource extraction and disposal that would violate these rights. The ordinance once voted in would fundamentally change the way the town handles state and federal regulatory procedures. It claims a right to determine the future of the Town by asserting the right to make decisions about water and mineral corporate extraction and disposal projects that apply for a permit to operate in Barrington. Current law allows permits granted by state regulatory agencies to override town authority. When the town asserts the right to decide on issues related to the health, safety and welfare of residents through the adoption of a rights-based law, corporations are required to comply with local authority. In March of 2016 the residents of Barrington voted in favor of the Rights Based Ordinance. Presently we are planning on furthering our education of not only Barrington residents, but to the surrounding towns and eventually throughtout the state. More and more people are aware of how precious our water is, especially after the drought we experienced this past summer.
