Columbus Magnet School
Our Purpose
We are trying to restore the land behind our school for local wildlife, students and the Community. We hope this area becomes a place where students can bond with nature, care for it and play in it. Research shows that time in a green space can reduces stress, improve cognition (restore attention, improve memory), enhance mood among many other health benefits (Logan and Selhub: Vis Medicatrix naturae: does nature “minister to the mind”? BioPsychoSocial Medicine 2012 6:11.) Although there needs to be more research, there is enough to act. We are trying to create a Schoolyard Habitat for and with our students. We hope to transform it from a glass filled eroding urban hill used illegally at night, into something that students and people from the Community care for, learn from and feel restored by. Columbus Teachers, Students and Habitat Team members have been learning about our ecosystem, the role of Native Plants, animal and ways to care for the outdoors (Ex: No Pesticides).
