The Fairmount Greenway Task Force (FGTF) was founded in 2008 is to promote healthier and "greener" neighborhoods for the 90,000 low and moderate income and predominantly minority residents living within the Fairmount Corridor. The 9-mile Corridor is the area within ½ mile of the Fairmount /Indigo Commuter Rail Line in Boston, that runs through Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park. These are environmental justice neighborhoods whose residents suffer disproportionately from many indicators of social and economic distress--including unemployment, poverty, school dropout rates, obesity, diabetes and respiratory problems. Our top priorities are: 1) turning city-owned vacant lots into community green space to promote growing more fresh healthy foods and other recreational uses, and 2) increasing options for bicycling and walking to and from the Rail Line for commuting to work and school and for recreational riding to neighborhood destinations.
