Storm Surge; The Merrimack Valley Coastal Adaptation Workgroup
Our Purpose
to educate the public about climate change and to convince towns to prepare long term plans to mitigate the effects of sea level rise, through working with nature not against it. A series of OPED pieces and articles in the local papers have convinced the towns of Newbury and Newburyport to consider setting up a blue ribbon panel to look at the long term management of Plum Island. This idea arose from a lecture given by Dr Thieler of Woods Hole who had chaired a similar panel in Falmouth. We have committees looking into having the Army Corps of Engineers do a sand cell analysis of the island to determine how sand moves along the beach. We are also working with the Parker River Wildlife Refuge on invasive species removal and reestablishing oysters to tampen down storm surge (see attached articles).
