Dorchester Food Co-op
Our Purpose
The Dorchester Community Food Co-op (DFC) is an initiative to build a food co-op in a diverse urban neighborhood. The multi-stakeholder co-op will include community and worker owners, and will stock affordable fresh produce, bulk items, and green household products. The store design, product mix, price structure and workforce will all reflect the rich cultural complexity of the community.Over the past decade, the natural food industry has been expanding rapidly. Although most of this expansion has happened outside of the inner city, the racially and socio-economically diverse residents of Dorchester are keenly aware of the health benefits of purchasing wholesome food. Dorchester is Boston’s largest neighborhood, and its rates of food related illnesses (diabetes and obesity) are among the highest in the city. Developing a food co-op in this inner city environment is a strategy for creating a community owned asset that brings affordable healthy food to our neighborhood.
