GardenShare
Our Purpose
GardenShare is a student-led practicum in the Plant, Soil, and Insect Sciences department at UMass Amherst. It is centered around experiential learning in our 1-acre, organically-managed garden. We teach students how to grow, harvest and preserve their own food, and we give them the space to actually do it. We aim to provide practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and a safe community. GardenShare also opens our space to the larger Amherst community, and we hope to extend our reach as we grow. In a world where food is mostly processed and packaged, we hope to reconnect our peers to their food, and ultimately their health. College students sit a lot, sleep too little, and stress too much. When we held a jam making workshop and asked the attendees what they were missing from their UMass experience, the number one response was, hands-on work. People crave exercise, sunlight and community. We aim to help our peers grow in our space until they are ready to create gardens of their own.
