Cornwall Conservation Commission
Our Purpose
The Conservation Commission (CCC) advocates for the preservation of Cornwall’s important natural features: its forest blocks, wildlife and wildlife habitat, wetlands, streams and riparian areas. We support the work of the Planning Commission by offering guidance and recommendations on natural resource matters and we complete an environmental impact review for each application that comes before the Development Review Board. 2015 marked the completion of an ecological inventory of the town overseen by the CCC. During this project, public forums generated enthusiasm and led to virtually all landowners contacted allowing their land to be inventoried. Educating and informing townspeople about the interconnections between wildlife, its habits and humans has been a primary focus of the CCC since then. Shortly after the completion of the inventory, the CCC, along with the Planning Commission, held a community values mapping session with about 60 townspeople identifying and mapping values that ranged from wildlife, to community places, to hunting and fishing, to scenic resources. For the past three years, the CCC has recorded wildlife sightings on trail cameras placed throughout Cornwall. This grass-roots effort involved residents who voluntarily placed CCC-provided cameras on their property. The wide variety of other CCC programs (clean-ups, walks, workshops, talks, information tables, school visits) fosters community-wide connection.
