Our Purpose

The purpose of the Heirloom Seed Project is to educate the community about the value of heirloom varieties to our biodiversity and local food security, and to engage students in genetics and horticultural lessons with a historical purpose. Our summer 2012 Teen Ag Crew program helped us realize the need for a Community Food Coordinator who will establish lasting connections between the school and community food efforts such as the creation of a farmers market and the development of Cider Hill Farm, an educational farm with a community cider press. The Heirloom Seed Project at MVHSl is the oldest high school seed-saving program and the sixth largest heirloom seed bank in the United States. Each seed has a history, and the Heirloom Seed Project values this as much as the potential environmental or culinary value of its heirloom seeds. Heirloom seeds are sold locally through the student-generated catalog, and worldwide through Seed Saver's Exchange.
