to transform blighted properties in the West End neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island by fostering the cultivation of land, lives and community. The Sankofa Collaboration was conceptualized in response to imminent needs for local, healthy and more accessible cultural food in the West End. Sankofa is an Akan, Ghanaian word which "means returning to your roots." In response to growing cultural diversity of the neighborhood and the urgent needs for access to healthy culturally specific foods, West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation convened key neighborhood stakeholders and residents to address the issue of accessible healthy food. Sankofa Collaboration values the transformational celebration of food, culture and community in our everyday lives.
