Mashpee Village Resident Volunteers
Our Purpose
to provide residents with the opportunity to garden within their own premises, whether in their own designated raised-bed box or in the shared community garden, thereby reducing isolation, promoting a sense of community, increasing physical activity, and improving both physical and mental health. Many of the residents have a long history as rental tenants (often spanning generations), and have limited opportunity to garden. The benefits of gardening include an increased opportunity of social interactions and connections, in other words, reduced isolation. They meet over the earth and have an immediate connection and topic; a shared interest. A sense of community develops. Additionally, there is the benefit of physical activity and the inclusions of fresh vegetables in the diet. There will be an enhanced acceptance of fresh vegetables in the diet, especially among the youth who are introduced to the growing process.
