Our Purpose

Our extensive volunteer group is dedicated to creating positive change with local action. Our main focus is local food, namely building edible gardens at schools and starting town farms. We have an extensive internship program, working with young people to build gardens in Bridgeport and surrounding communities. We have committed to building edible gardens in all 30 schools in Bridgeport and are about to break ground on an urban farm there. All food grown in Bridgeport serves the local community, including school cafeterias, food banks, community centers and convalescent homes.

Summary of Projects

The Green Village Initiative received a grant in 2011 for materials to start one school garden in Bridgeport. The Initiative pulled together all Bridgeport school coordinators and have developed a network of champions at each school to ensure local success. The community-school gardens will offer an (additional) opportunity to bring more fresh produce to the community.
