Si Se Puede, Inc.
Our Purpose
In 1984, Si Se Puede began providing academic support and educational enrichment to school age children (mostly grades 1-8) living in Lawrence, MA's largest public housing project. SSP's overarching goal in all it does is to narrow opportunity and achievement gaps between these underserved children and their peers from more affluent families and communities. In addition to enhancing academic success, SSP aspires to encourage good citizenship, develop leadership, build community and otherwise prepare children for lives of academic and career success. Yet, most of its After School Program and even its summer programming has focused on literacy and math. Ironically, the pandemic brought some welcome revelations in terms of seeing what children need to thrive and succeed. Forced to shift from 1-to-1 math tutoring and visits from literacy volunteers--all highly valued, and which will continue--SSP is now giving children with more chances to develop socially and emotionally, to use intelligence other than verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical. The Community Gardening is a prime example. Children will be learning by doing via experiential learning. Every day will be a social-emotional lesson as they solve problems together; as partnerships, leadership and teamwork emerges; as they plan, build and work in the Community Garden and Mini Farmers Market in the coming months.
