Our Purpose

The Athol Bird and Nature Club (ABNC) was established in 1963  as a junior high science club by founder Robert B Coyle. Bob was my teacher in 1964 when I joined the club. Bob remained president until 1988 when he retired and I became president and continue in that role to the present day. We have transformed the club into a regional highly respected resource. Our current membership in the club stands at 242 members. Our largest project is the management of an 1898 schoolhouse as the Millers River Environmental Center (MREC) which began operation in the town-owned building in 2000. The Center is a growing collaboration of groups interested in the environment, natural history, land protection, energy, water resources, gardening, photography, and recreation. We have worked closely with all of our partners and organizations including schools and the local YMCA to provide programs, talks walks and workshops run by our many volunteers. This is the part where we are in need of help. With so many volunteers and successful programs, we are quite interested in getting help in the form of an education/community organizer. One strategy would be to partner with Mount Grace to hire a Terracorp intern to work a half time person split their time at each organization.
