Our Purpose

The mission of YCAFC is to build climate resilience in Franklin County communities by implementing "nature-based solutions" to local climate problems. Since the group began organizing in 2021, thirteen youth members have participated in the construction of seven climate-positive gardens in downtown Turners Falls, an environmental justice neighborhood (see https://www.mass.gov/info-details/environmental-justice-populations-in-m...). These projects address many of the ways climate change threatens our communities. Our gardens filter stormwater, cool the urban environment, create habitat, and reduce flooding. In addition, YCAFC projects generate resilience by improving the social infrastructure of the neighborhoods where we work. The public gathering spaces we build function as places that produce an informed, interconnected, and resilient community. In addition to offering meaningful employment, YCAFC helps youth members learn about ecology and natural processes, gain skills in landscape design and installation, and develop a sense of agency amidst our changing world.
