Our Purpose

Young Writers Project’s mission is to inspire, mentor, publish, and promote young writers and artists. Voices for Change is a project within Young Writers Project (YWP) that provides a platform for youth (mostly ages 13-19 in the Burlington, Vermont area) to speak out on the urgent issues of their lives including climate change and social justice. It is a youth-led group that was inspired by Muslim Girls Making Change (MGMC), an award-winning slam poetry group that started with YWP in 2016. MGMC were recipients of the 2018 National Education Association SuAnne Big Crow Memorial Award for promoting human and civil rights. With YWP and Voices for Change, young people tell their stories with clarity and power to authentic audiences through YWP's website,; publications (annual anthology, monthly digital magazine, The Voice, Vermont newspapers, public radio and other media); writing workshops; and community spoken word events. The goal is to amplify youth voice and make change!

Summary of Projects

This group received a 2019 Young Leader grant to support Voices for Change, a youth-led project creating four community writing workshops and spoken word events focusing on climate change and related social justice issues during the 2019-20 school year in Burlington, Vermont.
