Our Purpose

Our mission is to give the children of our school the opportunity to engage in active learning and exploration through gardening, creating essential connections between people, plants, and the earth; and inspiring lifelong healthy choices with respect for our planet. Our community, in Chittenden County, has a rich farming history and it still surrounds our schools today. But within the school, foods lack whole food ingredients and breakfasts are often processed. We once had an active school garden, but it lost its garden coordinator years ago and the program stalled out. I, Jackie Ward, have taken this role and I plan to engage students in the classroom as it relates to history, math, literacy, science, and agriculture; and in the cafeteria, as it relates to their interest in whole fruits and vegetables and nutrition comprehension; and in the community with a farm to school committee to create a bridge of learning and curiosity home. Our primary goal is to create education around food and its nutritional purpose. Second, to expose students to food's origin through gardening at school.  The third is to create new habits of aware and thoughtful food consumers as it relates to personal nutrition, local enemies, and environmental impact.
