Wheelock Town Hall Accessibility Project Committee (WTHAPC)
Our Purpose
WTHAPC seeks to make Wheelock Town Hall, built in 1871, fully accessible to all. Townspeople have been struggling for 15 years to find a solution. Our work is prompted by an agreement with deadlines that the Town was required to sign with U.S. Dept. of Justice in May 2020 to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The current effort, supported by a State of Vt. municipal planning grant (MPG), funds an outreach component to encourage community members to participate in developing solutions with the architectural consultants. In spring 2020 following “Wheelock’s Future” meetings led by Vt. Council on Rural Development (VCRD), two task forces formed, Communications (CTF) and Facilities (FTF). CTF worked with Wheelock Community Initiative volunteers to combat the climate of misinformation by helping the Town develop its first ever website, creating an e-news list of 100, and launching a monthly, 2-page, free, print newsletter The Miller’s Run, now in its 13th edition. WCI covers Selectboard, community and project news and Covid resources. FTF completed 6 months of research and meetings, reviewing all past Town Hall and town garage proposals, contacting regulatory officials, and exploring out-of-the-box options, leading to outdoor community presentations in Oct. 2020. Following the MPG award, FTF became the WTHAPC, and its members were appointed by the Select Board in Jan. 2021, and continue to communicate closely with the Board.
