Our Purpose

Western Mass Wheelers provides free, safe, and enjoyable bike rides across WMass on specially adapted tricycles for individuals unable to pedal on their own. Focus is on seniors in our community residing in assisted living centers or at home alone. Our program provides an unique opportunity to connect with nature, enhance mental health, and enjoy a refreshing change of scenery that can improve physical health and overall quality of life. Rides take place on rail trails and peaceful neighborhood streets, following routes filled with vibrant surroundings. Wheelers get to experience the outdoors and engage with the community. Our program was inspired by Portland Wheelers (www.portlandwheelers.org) and MDI Wheelers (www.mdiwheelers.org). I had the chance to see MDI Wheelers in action during the summer of 2023, and I was immediately struck by how simple the model was—and how big of a difference it was making. Around that same time, my long-time employer announced they were relocating their headquarters, so I knew a career change was on the horizon. I wanted to do something that made a real, positive impact on people’s lives. Starting this nonprofit felt like the right move, not just for me personally, but for our community. It offers a creative, much-needed solution to a challenge many seniors face: staying active, connected, and being  outdoors.
