Our Purpose

The Washington Environmental Council (WEC) is a 501 (c)3 domestic not-for-profit corporation based in Washington, Connecticut. Since its founding in 1971, the Council’s mission has been to be an advocate for and provide leadership in maintaining, protecting and enhancing the environmental quality of the Town of Washington and the surrounding area. WEC organizes and supports a wide range of community services, including the Earth Day roadside cleanup, Climate Change Awareness Day, Household Hazardous Waste Day, the Harwood Environmental Lecture Series, Environmental Programs for Local Schools, College Scholarships for Environmental Studies and many other one time environmental events. It is also an active environmental steward and intervenes early in situations that threaten to degrade the environment. Our goal is to keep Washington and the surrounding area the very special and beautiful place that it is for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
