Our Purpose

WalkBike Springfield exists to make walking and biking in Springfield, Massachusetts safe, accessible, and normal for everyday transportation, not just recreation. Springfield is one of the poorest communities in the Connecticut River Valley region and has one of the highest rates of household non-car ownership in the state, so safe active-transportation options aren't a lifestyle choice for many residents, they're a necessity. Our overarching goal is to improve conditions for walking and bicycling so more residents can safely commute to work and school, run errands, and get around for recreation without a car. We work to remove the physical, social, and policy barriers that keep people off bikes and sidewalks, and to encourage residents who currently drive short trips to swap them for walking or biking instead. We do this by identifying gaps in infrastructure, partnering with the City of Springfield, private businesses, and regional planning bodies, and mobilizing community members to advocate for and help build the changes their neighborhoods need.
