The Village Edible Garden (VEG), a committee supported by the Town of Wolcott, was formed in the spring of 2026 to address the issue of food inequality, and the idea of using a community garden to educate families about good nutrition, food courses, and group/family interactions. In 2025, the Town of Wolcott was deeded a large piece of land in a FEMA buyout. Most of this land was not flooded, and although we are restricted in its use, we are allowed to create parks and community gardens on the buyout land. The mission of VEG is to help plan and oversee the Wolcott Village Garden. This committee will work with village residents to grow affordable locally grown food for their own consumption. Many people living in the Wolcott village are renters or property owners who don’t have land adequate to create gardens. This community garden will serve those families. We have designated 1 acre of land for the garden, divided into ~12 plots either 10’x30’ or 20’ x 40’. The remaining land will be planted and maintained by the Committee members, growing onions, potatoes, and sweet corn and made available to the community. In time, we will be planting an orchard of pear and apple trees along the borders. The Town of Wolcott, VT recognizes the Village Edible Garden as a Town committee, and will be the primary holder of the funds in a designated VEG account. The Town provides the necessary insurances to operate.
