Our Purpose

UTEC’s mission and promise is to ignite and nurture the ambition of proven-risk young adults to trade violence and poverty for social and economic success. UTEC is dedicated to helping young people overcome the very real challenges of poverty, gang involvement, unemployment, and cultural barriers that are pervasive in our communities. UTEC uses a proven model to create success and better futures for our young adults, and ultimately, for all of us.UTEC’s nationally recognized model begins with intensive street outreach, correctional facility in-reach, and gang peacemaking to reach young adults who have histories of serious criminal involvement. UTEC provides workforce training through social enterprises and alternative education through onsite HiSET (GED) preparation and more. Social justice workshops and youth-led policymaking are embedded throughout the model. Our 2Gen program provides free on-site child care and integrated family engagement services. Finally, UTEC hosts the state’s first and only Training Center for Excellence around gun and youth violence prevention. UTEC’s primary outcomes are: reduced recidivism, increased employability, and increased educational attainment. The long-term recidivism rate of UTEC participants averages less than 15%, compared with a statewide average above 50%
