Our Purpose

The overall purpose of the Uprooted and Rising Boston Branch is to dismantle white supremacy in the local Boston-area food system by creating opportunities for communities in Boston to control the production and distribution of healthy, accessible culturally appropriate food. This primarily manifests in the form of student organizing against exploitative university dining contracts with major food service providers and direct support for community growing projects and local farmers of color. The intent of organizing against dining contracts is to create opportunities within Boston’s many educational institutions for local food producers and processors (particularly those of color) to provide nourishment to their own communities, rather than contracting multi-national corporations to do the job. Opening the door for institutions to create contracts with local businesses will redirect money away from Big Food Corporatations and into the communities that universities actively occupy. At the same time, supporting growers of color and creating opportunities for communities to grow their own food is our way of envisioning a more robust and sustainable future of local food sovereignty. We seek to connect Boston communities with the tools to radically change their relationship to food and to the land they live on, in the hopes of creating a model of sustainable, community-controlled production and distribution.
