Our Purpose

Our purpose is to build climate resilient communities in the Upper Valley region of VT and NH through research, information sharing, and education. UVAW formed in 2012 as a bi-state, multistakeholder working group of volunteer community members, leaders and partner organizations. In the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, we saw that many groups were working on mitigation to slow the pace of climate change (such as energy efficiency) – but no group was working on adaptation to prepare for changes we know are inevitable, and are already happening. Many communities are unsure what steps to take, and lack capacity; knowledge is spread among sectors that may rarely talk to each other. Our goal is to engage a broad range of stakeholders to identify vulnerabilities and prepare for future climate impacts; cross-pollinate knowledge about resilience strategies that work in rural communities; inspire and support them in taking collaborative actions that break down silos; share case studies of success from other communities; and link them to local, state, and federal resources that can assist their efforts. Our website includes all of the presentations, videos, and handouts from the multiple public forums and projects we have presented since 2013.
