Truro Children's Community Garden
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to collaborate with our community to encourage health and wellness, support our local food system, encourage food justice, and increase demand for local food (thus supporting local farmers and the local economy). We do this by growing food with children, introducing them to local farmers, and then helping them to make connections between what they eat, the environment it comes from, and how it affects their bodies. By focusing our work on young people, we find they share information with the adults in their lives. Additionally, the gardening (and reflection) work enables formative learning and habits that encourage healthy, sustainable lifestyle choices. The children's resulting decisions impact our families and our community for many years. Truro is a small community of approximately 2,000, but its population swells to nearly 20,000 in the summer so we are fortunate to have a both a year-round and summer population of children who can learn about local food. The children grow through our programs to become "Food Ambassadors", helping us to educate and create a healthy, safe and equitable regional food system and more sustainable local community.
