Our purpose is to improve and expand the book sharing practice at our town recycling center. For several years residents have been bringing books to the center where they are available for anyone to take for free. This is a much appreciated and well used service. However there is a definite problem we who use it are all aware of. The books are getting ruined by rain and snow because the only place to store them is beneath the eves of the recycling shed.  Many books then need to be thrown away. Also because there is so little space for them they are stored in stacked up boxes. This makes it difficult to look through and so hampers our ability to share books.  One of the workers at the recycling center told me people are getting upset that we have to throw out books and that they can't get to the books when they are stacked up in boxes.  She told me many people use the book drop off. I told her I wanted to do something about it and she pleaded with me to go to the Select board to get a shed approved. I did and then a group quickly formed to work on this. The immediate goal of our group is to build a book shed lined with shelves where we can store and organize the books, where even more books can be dropped off and made available to people and where the books will be well protected.
