Tinmouth Egg Farm (TEF) and Highfields center for composting are partnering to develop a sustainable, low-input model for local food production. TEF is a nascent farm-based enterprise associated with Solarfest, a Tinmouth-based organization focusing on education/awareness of renewable energy. TEF is also associated with neighboring Breezy Meadows Farm, a local established vegetable farm. TEF plans to operate a chicken farm/egg-production system utilizing local food scraps as the primary feed source for laying hens. Residuals from chicken-feeding will then be composted on farm to provide an on-farm soil amendment and ancillary saleable farm product. Highfields will provide technical assistance in the areas of project planning, development, and implementation. Our group will effectively develop a local farm enterprise and community-scale compost site, serving as a pilot project and replicable model to be shared with the public through multiple platforms.
