Our Purpose

The purpose of our group is to carry out removal of invasive species and monitoring for their return in two areas in Blackstone Park Conservation District, a 45 acre natural city park and wildlife corridor on the tidal Seekonk River in Providence, Rhode Island. One of these areas was selected as an urban demonstration site by the American Recovery Act Healthy Forest Initiative. A heavy covering of invasive plants was removed from 1.4 acres, and partially replanted with native RI plants of the oak/hickory plant community. We monitor as required by the CRMC on this particular site, and also, working with a small group of dedicated volunteers throughout the field season, we remove invasive plants from other areas in the park to control their spread into other parts of the neighborhood and park.
