Our Purpose

SMMC’s Mission Statement:Sustain Mid Maine Coalition (SMMC), recognizing the challenges of climate change, works to increase sustainable practices in the mid Maine region through education, programming, and projects focused on energy conservation, fossil fuel alternatives, local agriculture and sustainable food systems, and waste reduction.  Sustain Mid Maine Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a  collaborative partnership of major stakeholders (engaged citizens, municipal leaders, educational institutions, businesses, and service agencies) working  to build the systems and infrastructure for a thriving community and a sustainable economy.

Summary of Projects

Sustain Mid Maine Coalition received a grant in 2011 to expand the community garden offerings by creating more available beds within the city as well as in nearby towns. The group was able to build 10 raised bed gardens at the Alfond Youth Center. This facility provides summer and after-school childcare for children from families with limited incomes. Some of the funds were used to expand the Winslow Community Garden from 15 to 30 beds, and some was used to beautify the area surrounding the Waterville Community Garden.
