Springfield for Clean Air
Our Purpose
Building on the great success that we had in stopping an already permited biomass plant in Springfield MA, we are working to encourage area businesses to pollute Springfield's air less. Originally, we were targeting 5 area corporations including Exxon/Mobil, but we have now deceided to concentrate on Solutia. Solutia is the largest chemical plant in New England, occupying 170 acres and empolying over 500 workers. Solutia was originally a part of Monsanto. Solutia currently burns coal in an outdated and underscrubbed boiler system. We also suspect that Solutia is regularly releasing toxins both into the air and into the Chicopee River. The asthma rate in Springfield is 4 times that of the rest of the state, and the American Lung Association gives our air quality an F. Mary Booth has a doctorate in environmental science, Kelly Bitov is our lead lawyer and Bill Gibson has much grass roots organizing experience. Together, we are planning a comprehensive campaign.
