Our Purpose

The goal of Somerville Community Land Trust (SCLT) is to build community power and stability in Somerville, Massachusetts, by acquiring residences and land and making them permanently affordable. Somerville is the most densely populated community in New England and one of the most ethnically diverse in the country. For decades, Somerville has faced an increasingly competitive housing market due in part to green gentrification, largely from urban renewal programs. The 2008 recession, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the extension of the Green Line metro service have further contributed to a runaway real estate market and widespread housing instability. Today, the city’s most vulnerable residents, especially low-income, immigrant, racialized, elderly, LGBTQ+, and disabled folks, are at the highest risk of displacement. The CLT is a long-term strategy that provides stable, affordable homeownership opportunities far into the future. Our work strives to create a stable community that is resistant to economic pressures currently causing displacement, while working with at-risk populations, legislators, and allies to address the ongoing housing crisis.
