Our Purpose

SoapWorks formed in response to a simple but urgent gap: access to truly safe, non-toxic hygiene products—and the skills to make them—has quietly disappeared from many communities, even as chemical exposure, skin conditions, and environmental health concerns rise. Our big picture goal is to restore soap-making as a form of community care, environmental stewardship, and shared skill-building. We believe soap is not just a consumer product, but a foundational public health tool—one that can be made locally, safely, and collectively using transparent ingredients and low-waste methods.SoapWorks brings people together to learn, make, and share soap through hands-on workshops and community distribution, prioritizing non-toxic materials, plastic reduction, and accessibility. We are especially interested in supporting people who are often left out of environmental and economic conversations—caregivers, women, and community members seeking practical skills that support both health and dignity. At its core, SoapWorks is about shifting how care circulates: from extractive, opaque systems toward local knowledge, mutual support, and environmental responsibility. By teaching people how to make and understand what touches their skin every day, we aim to strengthen individual agency, reduce environmental harm, and build resilient, place-based networks of care that can grow and adapt over time.
