Our purpose is to create an environmental stewardship amongst the 5th graders within our school.   A school garden is a poweful educational tool that allows for many opportunities in and out of the classroom.   As we are talking about Science within the classroom we can also walk outside and talk about the web of interactions between living and non-living organisms.    We feel that it's important with our new Science standards to have children establish connections with nature at a young age to increase their awareness of the environment as earthly citizens.    Engaging in these agricultural practices also creates opportunities for students to collaborate with each other and make real-life decisions amongst the community of growers.      As a community of teachers in an urban area we understand the importance of showing the students how important our earth is and the resources that can come from it.   We are hoping with the efforts of a school garden that we will be able to increase community engagement amongst our students and their families.   In years to come we feel that we can build this garden to open it up as a farm to school/table organization.    This small garden has such opportunity to grow in so many ways.
