Rhode Island and Massachusetts have strong local food and organic farming communities, but many small and mid-sized farms across the region face persistent challenges with labor, succession, and long-term viability. These farms feed their communities through CSAs, farmers markets, farm stands, food access partnerships, and wholesale channels while managing rising costs, narrow margins, and the seasonal need for skilled workers. At the same time, aspiring farmers often lack exposure to paid, structured pathways to gain access to necessary land, work, mentorship, technical skills, and business knowledge. This gap is especially pressing in a region where farmland is limited and expensive, agricultural networks can be difficult to enter, and farming sustainably and responsibly requires more than one-season, one-farm experience. Beginning farmers need opportunities to learn across varied production systems, soil types, markets, and management approaches, alongside training that treats farming as land stewardship rather than simply crop production. Seed to Seed addresses this gap by creating a paid pathway into farming that also supports the established regional farms training new growers. The opportunity is practical and generational: strengthen today’s working farms while preparing future farmers to steward local land, grow food for their communities, and sustain the region’s agricultural future.
