Schoodic Food Pantry
Our Purpose
Our primary purpose is to eliminate hunger as a daily concern for our neighbors in the rural Maine communities of Gouldsboro, Winter Harbor, Steuben, Sullivan and beyond. Ours is a market pantry with shelves stocked much like a grocery store. Our adult volunteers have been with us since we opened nearly two years ago and have established relationships with those who come to us. They tell us what they like and need and make suggestions. We have a chat table where patrons can enjoy coffee or tea and conversation. We know that many of them have limited opportunities to socialize and we believe that is an important part of healthy living. We welcome representatives of area service organizations to our chat table for information sessions, and provide a space for donated clothing, bedding, school supplies and holiday gifts. We are fundraising to build an addition which will include a kitchen and allow us to do cooking classes. It is important that our patrons know how they can best use the food on our shelves to feed their families. Gardening is another area of interest for many and we look forward to gardening classes as well. These classes, as well as others, have been suggested by our patrons.
