Our Purpose

Save Sand Pond is dedicated to preserving and improving the quality of Sand Pond and the surrounding Massasoit Terrace Neighborhood.  Sand Pond is situated in Rhode Island's second largest city.  It is a gem in the middle of a dense residential neighborhood and a very busy road.  It is Warwick's last swimmable pond with public access.  It is located on a bus route and is used by many from Warwick, Cranston and Providence.  The neighbors are aware that the pond is sensitive and that great care is necessary to protect it since it is relatively small.  The Pond has become a centerpoint of the neighborhood and the local community especially since the Corona Virus.     There is a public beach, and a public path around the Pond.  This is a community resource, not just a bunch of waterfront owners that want to keep something to themselves.  We are working to keep this as the precious resource for the community. In 2016, Save Sand Pond was formed when a wealthy developer backed by high-powered attorneys, who don't live in our neighborhood, proposed to demolish a day care facility to build a 3 story self-storage facility abutting the pond.  The planning department testified that the project will change the neighborhood and environmental characteristics of the pond.   After this project is over, our group is committed to keeping and improving our neighborhood community.
