Salem Food Policy Council
Our Purpose
Salem, Massachusetts is a diverse, urban, coastal city with a high percentage of low-income community members. Before the creation of the Salem Food Policy Council (SFPC) in 2016, food access and food insecurity were fairly invisible issues that not much was known about. The 2018 Salem Community Food Assessment, published by the SFPC, presented data showing the prevalence of food insecurity in Salem and the lack of organization and collaboration among food assistance organizations. The assessment provided recommendations for municipal and organizational improvements which has served as the group's work plan. In 2023, the SFPC transitioned from an independent coalition to a municipal Advisory Council to the Mayor. We have a more diverse membership and have created 4 subcommittees to help implement our work and plan for our next assessment. We have also updated our Mission Statement:"The Salem Food Policy Council assesses the city’s food landscape and engages the Salem community to identify how and where community members are able to access nutritious and affordable food, and makes evidence-based recommendations to community and municipal leaders to promote food justice and health equity."The food landscape and community needs have changed drastically since COVID, and the data that the SFPC began collecting in 2016 requires updating to ensure we are meeting the needs of our our most vulnerable community members.
