Our Purpose

Community Resilience Organizations (CROs) are a new pilot program that make resilience everyone’s business. Local teams, appointed by the Selectboard, break down social silos by engaging local government leaders, emergency responders, churches, schools, conservation groups and more. CROs teams reach out to neighborhood groups, churches, schools, sports teams, social service programs, committees and clubs. They educate people on resilience and hazards and involve them in concrete projects to reduce their personal risk and community risk. Through an annual Day for CROing, the whole community works together on tangible projects that make places safer and stronger.Studies have shown that communities with strong social capital and ties have significantly lower risk and fewer negative impacts in disaster situations. When neighbors know each other and collaborate effectively, they are better able to care for each other, solve their own problems and tackle any challenge that comes. The Richmond CRO is seeking this GROW grant in order to hire a local coordinator to make the Richmond Day for CROing a success, and to cover some additional expenses toward food and music.  All the team members are stretched volunteers - someone needs to be dedicated to helping the team plan, publicize and organize that day for the community to come together and complete resilience projects, learn about hazards and resilience efforts, and celebrate. The annual event includes organizing teams for the work projects, seminars and education, art and creative engagement, food beyond potluck and music.  We hope a significant amount may be gained via donation, but that will require a coordinator pursuing those gifts as well. We know a local coordinator is needed in order to make the Day for CROing in this pilot a success.
