Rhody Native
Our Purpose
The Rhody Native initiative is a program of the Rhode Island Natural History Survey, with a mission to provide consumers with source identified, genetically diverse native plant material. The focus is on the legal and sustainable collection of seed from plants native to Rhode Island, emphasizing the importance of genetic diversity within each species. Despite a growing consumer interest in native plants and locally produced products, and a conservation need for genetically diverse native plant material for habitat restoration, growers within the state rely on out of state sources of genetically limited plant material. Rhody Native works directly with the nursery industry to build the capacity of Rhode Island's growers to offer consumers native plant material that will be resilient to local environmental changes and supports the diversity of the state's wildlife habitats for pollinators, birds, and mammals.
