Portland Free Pantry
Our Purpose
Organizing under the ideology of mutual aid and following our experiences working with free stores doing direct outreach, our goal is to build a semi-permanent free pantry and fridge that is open to the entire Portland community to contribute to, as well as take from. The aim is to offer many of the necessary essentials offered by other community aid groups (such as survival gear, clothes, hygiene products, sharps collection, narcan, OTC meds and wound care, as well as food items), but with the understanding that we as a group will not be solely responsible for stocking it, and are instead depending on wider community engagement for it to be full. In essence, we are seeking to create a space to facilitate accessing the necessary goods without having to physically run it ourselves all the time. By partnering with local businesses and opening it up to the entire community (unhoused, low income, middle class and wealthy alike) to give/take from, we aim to start a dialogue regarding immediate community care and create a meeting place for the community to better understand its needs. Ultimately, we hope this project can act as a catalyst for building a culture and infrastructure of mutual aid in Portland. One small group cannot build all of it, but we hope to get things started so that the community as a whole can build the rest, together. Our systems are failing us, and we must work together to build more egalitarian and accessible ones for ourselves. Solidarity not charity.
