Our Purpose

Our purpose: To help refugees from Somalia who live in Portland, ME to achieve a higher quality of life by providing them with needed resources such as clothes, rent money, food from the Food Bank. We focus on single mothers, on parents of children with disabilities including behavioral challenges related to Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Autism. We help the poorest of the poor. Our focus the last year has been building capacity for the organization to grow. We have a steady set of about 50 mothers we help on a regular basis. Their needs are wide-ranging. We meet in small groups in different women's homes. Or we are driving to an appointment or to get food or homegoods or something for the relatives. Many of the women are depressed, anxious, fearful of the future, traumatized by the past.
