Our Purpose

The Pittsfield Community Garden Program has 5 gardens and one gardening club in it's "programming". The general purpose is to provide access to healthy soil, education and support in growing food, beauty and shade, and offer a space for people to connect. Each garden is located in a different neighborhood--or area of a neighborhood--in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and has a different group of people who engage with it, with differing aims. Gardeners are each responsible for their beds or plots, assist with communal beds, and get to decide those aspects of how the gardens run as they are interested--it is the job of the program manager (Kamaar Taliaferro) to support gardeners in achieving their goals. This Seed Grant application is for the Robbins Avenue Community Garden which serves four primary purposes-- hosting an adults living with disabilities group, sharing seeds and plants with nearby gardeners, demonstrating low-input gardening, and sharing our produce with the food pantry whose property the garden is located on.
